Bob Chaplin
Moved to New York from England in 1986, and then to northeast Connecticut in 1989. Presently resides in Hartford, Connecticut.
While in England he lectured at many art colleges and Universities. He represented England in a 5 nation exhibition in Stavanger, Norway and developed a special relationship with that country. He was an artist in residence in the Lofoten Islands in Norway, beyond the Arctic circle, in 1985. It was there that he met his american wife Prudence Sloane.
Since moving to America he has taught at U.C.O.N.N. at Storrs, and the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, where he co-curated "The Edge of Town" at the Joseloff Gallery in 1996. He also lectured at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.
Was awarded a bursary to work with the 20"x 24" Polaroid camera in Manhattan, and in 1993, a Connecticut Commission of the Arts Bursary to produce a limited edition book/folio, "Eminent Views" with Stephen Bann. He was Artist in Residence at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York in 1997, The Alden Weir National Historic Site in Wilton, Connecticut in 2000 and at I-Park in East Haddam, Connecticut in 2012 and 2014. In 2020 he was awarded an Artist Fellowship Grant by Connecticut Office of the Arts.
His recent works are Garden Installations at I-Park in East Haddam, CT ; Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT and Five Points Center for the Visual Arts in Torrington, CT.
He has had over 40 solo shows since 1975 including exhibitions at The Queens’ Museum, N.Y.; 55 Mercer, N.Y.; Jon Oulman Gallery, Minneapolis; Riverside Studios, London; Arnolfini Gallery, England; Galerie Fenna De Vries Rotterdam, Holland and The Henie Onstad Arts Center in Oslo, Norway.
He has been included in group shows at the Art Institute Of Chicago; The Tate Gallery, London; Real Art Ways, Hartford; Art Space, New Haven; Atrium Gallery, University Of Connecticut; The Hudson River Museum, N.Y.; The Museum Of Modern Art, Oxford, England; "Photokina", Cologne, Germany, Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Milan Triennale in Italy.
